Answer button on the steering wheel vs rearview mirror

Q:  I called the Jeep saleman and he told me Jeep has their blue tooth answer button on the vehicles review mirror.  Do you happen to know which Manf has the answer button on the steering wheel?

A: Acuras definitely have them on the steering wheel.  Any readers out there want to comment on the other manufacturers?

q: Do you know of any bluetooth for Mercedes?

Q: Do you know of any bluetooth for Mercedes? I have a C class and want to
use the phone function without paying for the expensive dealer upgrade.
Does bluetooth make anything for the Mercedes?

A: There are a number of third party kits like the Parrot kits such as this one or this one that can be found at Expansys.  I personally have not tested them so I would read the user forums at Expansys which are usually quite good.

Q: Do BT phone adaptors work with BT cars?

Q: I am purchasing an  Acura RL and would like to use my current VZW plan
Motorola T730 with at least some of the basic HFL features available in
the RL. If I add the Motorola V400 (Bluetooth Wireless Adapter for Non
Bluetooth Motorola Phones- 98597H/DC600) to my T730, is there a chance
this will provide any functionality at all, or do I have to cough up the
$250 for a V710?

A: I have never heard of any of these bolt-on adaptors working.  many have
tried, many have failed.

I would wait for the LG VX8100 that VzW will hopefully be offering soon.

Can a Bluetooth audio adaptor be used with the iPod to play music on the HFL?

Q: Griffin Technologies just announced a Bluetooth audio adaptor for the iPod:
http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/bluetrip/index.php
Do you know if this will ultimately be useableto play ipod with Handsfreelink in the Acura?

A: No, I do not believe so.  The HFL system uses the "Handsfree" Bluetooth profile which essentially is  a specific protocol for some headsets as well as car systems.  Audio sent over Bluetooth generally uses the Bluetooth Audio Distribution profile.  So although these both use the bluetooth radio to communicate, they are not compatibile.

This is akin to two humans speaking two languages that are unkown by the other.  Both humans can hear what the other is saying , but it is not understood.

Have you heard anything about the compatibility of the Motorola v551 or Motorola razor V3 with the HFL?

Q: Have you heard anything about the compatibility of the Motorola v551 or Motorola razor V3 with the HFL?  Also what would your suggestion be or a Cingular phone?

A: I have heard the v551 works just fine, but I personally wouldn't recommend a motorola phone to anyone.  I think their menus are difficult to use, and their policies on locking down their phones are annoying at least.

I would recommend the Nokia 6230, 6620, or the upcoming Sony Ericsson S710a all EDGE capable phones on the Cingular network.

Blackberry 7100t and Motorola car kit?

Q:
I just had the Motorola hands free kit installed in my car yesterday for use with my T-Mobile/Blackberry 7100t. The phone and HF kit link up immediately but the voice communication does not work. Only immediately after the device and HF kit are synchronized for the first time is you able to use the hands free microphone and speaker. On subsequent calls, even though the phone and kit remain connected, the hands-free operation no longer works. The Motorola tech support people said that this problem is caused if the phone doesn't support Obex. I called T-Mobile and they have no idea what Motorola is talking about. What I find strange is that I had no problem using a Motorola Bluetooth headset with the same phone. Are the hands free kits somehow more sophisticated or work differently?
What can you advise me about this situation? If this hands-free kit won't work with the 7100t, are you aware of a HF kit that will work?

A: Car kits are more sophisticated because they usually allow transferring of your address book to the car system.  They also use a different Bluetooth protocol (or "Profile") than headsets.

OBEX is yet another Bluetooth protocol that stands for "object exchange" which is used to transfer things like address entries and vCards.

Hopefully RIM will update the firmaware on this phone at some point.  The rumor is that T-Mobile limited the functionality, but they've never done that with any of their other phones, so I am not sure what to believe there.

Will Motorola Razr V3 Work with HFL?

Q: Will Motorola Razr V3 Work with HFL?

A: You never really know until a final release is out in production, but the specifications are such that it should work with the Acura HFL. I think there will be more success with the Razr than with the V710 because this is a GSM phone that can be released independent of carriers, and will be released in Europe as well where carriers are generally much more open about bluetooth. Motorola is really getting a repuation for being pushed around by carriers (since carriers generally don't like motorola, and i say that from experience of being in meetings where people who work at various carriers who have said "we don't like motorola") so they have to do a bunch of wacky stuff to get carriers to distribute their handsets (see http://www.nuclearelephant.com/papers/v710.html and http://www.burningdoor.com/steve/archives/000129.html for just a couple examples).

I'll let you all know once i have tested one.
