Sony Ericsson P910i works with HandsFreeLink
Many readers have been writing to ask if the P910 would support the Handsfree Blutooth profile, and thus work with the Acura TL HandsFreeLink.
The answer is, it DOES support the Handsfree profile, and does work with the Acura TL, with a few caveats:
- after pairing, you have to turn bluetooth on the P910 on and off to get it to connect
- i had to manually connect to HFL as in the pictures above - it didn't seem to connect automatically when i got in the car
- when making a phone call, the P910 did automatically connect and prompted me to transfer to HFL as in the screenshot above
- the P910 DOES NOT send battery strength and signal strength to the instrument panel
i know the next question from many folks will be "Is Sony Ericsson going to provide an upgrade for my P900?" and my answer is "I have no idea, but they don't seem to look back, so I doubt it."
Other than that - a few notes on the phone - it's not terribly different from the P900. the only differences i see are
- a more complete Java MIDP 2.0 implementation
- some new icons in the default theme
- memory stick PRO - you cann now expand to 1GIG of memory
- oh, yeah, the keyboard. I mostly didn't know it was there. can you hold the phone by the keypad with two hands and type? not really. you can. it's sturday enough - but the keyboard is small. i was more successful one hand typing with my thumb like traditional texting. it was hard when i had to use the Shift key, which was often.

Are you saying that the p910 won't auto-connect each time I turn on the car, and I'm going to have to manually connect it? That's a reason for me to look for another phone. :-(

Looking at the bluetooth profile features in the Compliance Declaration for the P910a and the S700 you get the impression that they would both have the same handsfree functionality. I wonder if a firmware upgrade will solve the issue with the absence of phone status information in the MID. The battery and signal strength display is part of the mandatory HFP specification, not an optional feature.

My phone bonds with the 2005 Acura RL but the Hands Free Link does not recognize the Sony P910A after I give it a Name. I have tried to connect & disconnect B/T bot to no avail. I give up, there is no way it will connect....

I have been emailing back and forth with two guys from SE--one of which appears in the contact information on the Bluetooth Qualification Program Website that I believe Steve was referring to above. I recently purchased a P910a and found out that it does not work with my Chrysler 300C's U-Connect system--although my T637 works flawlessly. In any case, I suggest you email both of these guys if you're in a similar situation and express your concerns and complaints directly with the guys responsible for SE's Bluetooth qualification. Most importantly, that they're not in compliance with Bluetooth's HFP specification regarding sending signal/battery information to the handsfree device and the fact that the P910a does not work with ALL Bluetooth devices. I have told them that it's only a matter of time before SE and other companies who continue to do this become the target of class-action lawsuits for their misleading and deceptive advertising and product descriptions. Bluetooth is a standard; that's why SE puts it in their phones. It does not allow them to selectively pick and choose what level of compliance or what devices they're going to work with. SE Customer Support people even told me that SE "does not test its devices for Bluetooth compatibility" and could not "guarantee" anything but they suggested I purchase an SE Bluetooth headset because those *do* work. It was absolutely ridiculous. In any case, the two guys at SE are Lennart Skoglund (lennart.skoglund@sonyericsson.com) and Lennart Peters (Lennart.Peters.x@sonyericsson.com). These are the guys you should immediately send your complaints to so they will understand the extent and possible consequences of this problem. As consumers, we should not continue to stand by idle and let companies pull this crap.

Sorry for the delay.
Some one should informed you about the HF profile and the P900. There is no handsfree update for P900, if we add an extra profile to the phone we have to qualify the phone again. The P910a has got the HF profile, but I can't guarantee the compability with Acura HF car-kit, because we haven't done any Acura interoperability tests.

P910i and Acura paired, but when tried to place a call using Acura's phone control buttons, message in the phone poped up asking me if I want to keep call in the phone or not. No matter wich option I pick car looses connection with the phone right away.
I don't know if it will work with incoming calls, will ex[eriment more tonight.

Here is how to make sure that p910i connects to Acura TL Handsfree on first attempt ( you will need to do this every time you want to use p910i with your Acura Handsfree):
Assumption is that your BT in the phone is active and you previously paired it with Acura Handsfree.
1. Enter your car.
2. Place key in the ignition, but do not start the car.
3. Open flip of the phone.
4. Click on Bluetooth icon at the bottom of the screen with stylus or finger.
5. Click on Handsfree button.
6. If you have more than one BT device paired with the phone, select HandsFreeLink TM from Bluetooth dropdown and click Done.
7. Within 3 seconds start your car.
8. You are now connected to Acura Handsfree.
You may receive calls. Don't even think about calling anyone - you will mess everything up and will have to go back to step 1.
9. Say Thank you (not really) to Sony Ericsson team for great BT functionality of p910i:-(

Regarding the P910a & Acura TL, to make a call & use the handsfree, you can either make the cakk directly from the phone or through the car. As soon as the call starts going through, press #1 to keep call in phone. Next, once the call is answered (not ringing anymore) transfer call to Handsfreelink by pressing the application's button (top right) then #4 & selecting Handsfreelink. This way you can both make & receive calls using the HandsFreeLink in the TL.

Thanks , I just got my new GSM
Handspring Treo 650 and it works flawlessly
with Acura's Handsfree. Also internet is much faster because it uses EDGE network.
I will probaly keep it and sell my p910 on eBay.

I got Nokia 9500 Communiator - it works perfectly with Acura TL Handsfree. It is much better quality then Treo 650 and compatible with p910. In addition to what p910 has, Nokia also supports Wi-Fi and EDGE. If you use BT Handsfree headset you just need to turn it off before starting your Acura. When you start your engine Acura will recognize Nokia 9500 immediately. Once you out of the car, turn on your BT Headset and it will start working with the phone right away.

I just got my p910a and i have an acura tl 04 with the car phone feature. I am so upset that i have to do all of those annoying setups just to work the phone with my car. I had a t616 and it worked flawlessly. I would figure that a phone that is worth so much more wouldn't be as good as the t616 bluetooth feature. I've been reading forums around everywhere but it's been quiet for a while. Is there an update on the bluetooth???

The problem appears that the bluetooth is compatabile, but the AT command set in the SE P9xx phones is limited. Also the lack of OBEX File transfer functions (again not part of the general bluetooth specificiations, but part of basic interoperability which should have been tested) Apple got around this idiocy for their isync product by creating a symbios agent to provide some rudimentary file transfer functions inorder to get their sync functions working. It appears that while a lot of the lower level SE devices T6xx for example completely implement the bluetooth transport and the protocol layers (AT commands, OBEX, etc) SE decided to leave that out of their top of the line unit.
